Grade Level: VI
Subject: Science
Topic: Light, Shadows and Reflections
Duration: 4–5 periods (45 minutes each)
Language: Bilingual (English and Hindi) – Explanations, terms, questions, and activities in both languages for inclusive learning in diverse Indian classrooms.
Rationale: This chapter introduces basic optics, helping students understand everyday phenomena like shadows, mirror images, and light behavior. It promotes scientific observation, experimentation, and critical thinking as per NEP 2020.
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
- Explain how light travels and classify objects as transparent, translucent, or opaque.
- Describe shadow formation and factors affecting shadow size/shape.
- Construct and explain a simple pinhole camera.
- Understand reflection of light and differences between image and shadow.
(Objectives in Hindi):

Introduction (Period 1: 10–15 minutes)
- Engagement Activity: Darken the room slightly. Shine torch on wall and ask: "Why can we see the light spot? How does light reach there?" Place hand in front: "What happened? Why is there a dark area?" Introduce: Light travels in straight lines
- Share topic and objectives bilingually.
Main Body (Periods 1–4)
Section 1: Light and Objects (Period 1: 20–30 minutes)
- Explanation: Light is a form of energy that enables vision. Sources: Natural (Sun) / Artificial (bulb). Objects:
- Transparent (पारदर्शी): Light passes fully (glass, clear water).
- Translucent (अर्धपारदर्शी): Light passes partially (frosted glass, oiled paper).
- Opaque (अपारदर्शी): Light blocked (book, wood).
- Activity: Activity 11.3 (NCERT style) – Shine torch through objects on screen. Predict & observe: Does light pass? Classify objects. Record in bilingual table.
Section 2: Shadows (Periods 2–3)
- Explanation: Shadow forms when opaque object blocks light path. Needs: Light source, opaque object, screen. Shadow same shape as object but size changes with distance. Umbra (पूर्ण छाया – dark), Penumbra (आंशिक छाया – lighter edges). Light travels straight (rectilinear propagation).
- Activity: Vary distances – Move object closer to torch/screen; observe shadow size change. Tilt object; see shape variation. Discuss: Why no shadow without screen? Why no shadow in dark?
- Examples: Sundial (shadow tells time), shadow puppetry in India.
Section 3: Pinhole Camera & Reflection (Period 4)
- Explanation: Pinhole camera: Light enters small hole → inverted image on screen (no lens). Reflection: Light bounces off shiny surfaces (mirror). Plane mirror: Erect, same size, laterally inverted image. Image vs Shadow: Image has color/details; shadow is dark silhouette.
- Activity: Make pinhole camera (NCERT Activity) – Poke hole in box, cover with foil, view outside scene on tracing paper. Observe inverted image. Mirror activity: Shine torch on mirror; redirect beam. Use comb for thin beam to show reflection angle.
Assessment (Period 4–5: 10–15 minutes)
- Formative Assessment: Bilingual oral quiz:
- Name one transparent object.
- Why is shadow formed?
- What happens in a pinhole camera?
- Difference between image and shadow?
- Worksheet: Match terms, draw/label shadow formation/pinhole camera, true/false.
- Practical: Observe & report shadow of a stick at different times (like sundial demo).
Conclusion (Period 5: 10 minutes)
- Recap: Summarize bilingually: "Light travels straight, forms shadows on blocking, reflects from mirrors to give images."
- Real-Life Connection: In Jharkhand – Use of mirrors in homes, shadows in tribal shadow plays, sunlight for drying crops.
- Motivation: "Understanding light helps us invent tools like cameras and enjoy nature's wonders!"
Homework / Extension
- Observe shadows of objects at home/school at different times; draw changes.
- Make a simple pinhole camera at home and show inverted image to family.
- Write 5 sentences on "Uses of mirrors in daily life" (English & Hindi).
Differentiation and Inclusivity
- Visual: Diagrams/charts/videos for visual learners.
- Kinesthetic: Hands-on experiments (torch, pinhole).
- Language: Bilingual support; pair students for activities.
- Inclusivity: Relate to local examples (e.g., sunlight in Jharkhand's forests, traditional shadow stories).
This plan is activity-based, aligns with NCERT experiments, and encourages inquiry. Adapt based on resources. Let me know if you'd like a vocabulary list, worksheets, or diagrams!
