Patterns in Mathematics

Weekly Lesson Plan: Patterns in Mathematics โ€“ Class 6 (NCERT Chapter 1)

Duration: 1 Week (5 periods, approx. 35โ€“40 minutes each)
Textbook: NCERT Class 6 Mathematics
Chapter: Chapter 1 โ€“ Patterns in Mathematics

๐ŸŽฏ Learning Objectives

By the end of this chapter, students will be able to:

  • Recognize and continue number and shape patterns
  • Identify arithmetic and geometric patterns
  • Create patterns using rules
  • Understand symmetry and patterns in nature and art
  • Develop logical reasoning and observation skills

๐Ÿ“… Day-wise Plan

Day 1: Introduction to Patterns

Topic: What are Patterns?
Activities:

  • Begin with examples: patterns on clothes, walls, nature (flowers, leaves, shells)
  • Number patterns on the board: 2, 4, 6, __, __
  • Ask students to find what comes next and why

Materials: Pictures of patterns in nature, board, chalk, textbook page 1โ€“2
Assessment: Oral Q&A, quick fill-the-blank pattern

Day 2: Number Patterns (Arithmetic and Geometric Sequences)

Topic: Identifying Rules in Number Patterns
Activities:

  • Introduce arithmetic patterns (e.g., +2, +5) and geometric patterns (ร—2, รท2)
  • Use a worksheet: Fill in missing numbers in patterns
  • Group activity: Each group creates a number pattern and explains the rule

Materials: Worksheets, number cards
Assessment: Worksheet evaluation, peer review

Day 3: Patterns Using Shapes and Objects

Topic: Shape and Design Patterns
Activities:

  • Use tangrams, paper cut-outs to form repeating and growing patterns
  • Students draw their own shape patterns in notebooks
  • Puzzle game: Continue the picture sequence

Materials: Tangram sets, colored paper, scissors, math notebook
Assessment: Sketch-and-show activity, notebook check

Day 4: Symmetry and Patterns in Nature and Art

Topic: Symmetry and Mirror Patterns
Activities:

  • Fold-and-cut activity to show line symmetry
  • Use mirrors to explore reflective patterns
  • Show traditional art (rangoli, kolam) with patterns

Materials: Mirror, chart paper, scissors, samples of Indian traditional patterns
Assessment: Drawing symmetrical figures in notebook

Day 5: Create Your Own Pattern โ€“ Project Day

Topic: Integration and Creativity
Activities:

  • Students design their own number or shape pattern
  • Gallery walk: Present patterns with rule explained
  • Recap quiz (5 short questions on types of patterns)

Materials: Chart paper, colors, ruler
Assessment: Pattern presentation, quiz scores

๐Ÿ“Œ Homework (Optional Daily Add-ons)

  • Day 1: Find 3 patterns around your house
  • Day 2: Complete 5 number patterns
  • Day 3: Draw a shape pattern using triangles and circles
  • Day 4: Find and draw something with symmetry
  • Day 5: Revise all concepts and patterns learned
