Many traditional craftspeople found it difficult to earn their livelihood.

PERIOD 4

The Revolt of 1857

Introduction

The Revolt of 1857 was a major uprising against the rule of the East India Company.

It began among soldiers at Meerut on 10 May 1857 and soon spread to several parts of northern and central India.

It is also called the:

  • Revolt of 1857
  • Indian Rebellion of 1857
  • Uprising of 1857

In many Indian textbooks, it is also described as the First War of Independence.

Beginning of the Revolt

Mangal Pandey

Mangal Pandey, a sepoy at Barrackpore, became an early symbol of resistance to Company rule in 1857.

The revolt then broke out at Meerut on 10 May 1857.

The rebels marched towards Delhi and declared the Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar as their symbolic leader.

PERIOD 5

Causes of the Revolt of 1857

The Revolt had many causes. It was not caused by only one event.

1. Political Causes

The Company was continuously expanding its territories.

Many Indian rulers and royal families feared losing their kingdoms and authority.

The Doctrine of Lapse, associated with Governor-General Lord Dalhousie, was particularly controversial. Under this policy, the Company annexed certain states when their rulers died without a natural male heir, rejecting adopted heirs in some cases.

Political dissatisfaction became an important cause of the revolt.

2. Economic Causes

Farmers, landlords, artisans and other groups were affected by Company policies.

Heavy revenue demands created difficulties for many farmers.

Traditional industries and crafts also suffered because of competition from British manufactured goods.

This created economic dissatisfaction.

3. Social and Religious Concerns

Some Indians feared that British policies and missionary activities might interfere with their traditional customs and religious beliefs.

Changes introduced under British rule sometimes created suspicion and fear among sections of Indian society.

4. Problems Faced by Indian Soldiers

Indian sepoys formed a large part of the Company's army.

They had several grievances related to:

  • Pay
  • Service conditions
  • Promotion
  • Treatment by British officers

These grievances contributed to military dissatisfaction.

5. The Immediate Cause – Greased Cartridges

A new rifle called the Enfield rifle was introduced.

There was a widespread belief among Indian soldiers that the cartridges were greased with the fat of cows and pigs.

The cartridge had to be bitten open before use. This offended both Hindu and Muslim soldiers because cows are sacred to many Hindus and pigs are considered forbidden in Islam.

The controversy over the cartridges became the immediate trigger for the revolt.

Important: The cartridge issue was the immediate cause, but the revolt had many deeper political, economic, social and military causes.

PERIOD 6

They became more cautious about the composition and organisation of the army and increased the proportion of British soldiers in important positions.

5. Changes in British Policy
