Our Environment and Conservation

Grade Level: IV
Subject: Environmental Studies (EVS)
Topic: Our Environment and Conservation
Duration: 4–5 periods (40–45 minutes each)
Language: Bilingual (English and Hindi) – Key explanations, terms, questions, and activities in both languages for better comprehension in diverse classrooms.
Rationale: Grade IV students learn to observe their surroundings, understand basic environmental components (air, water, soil, plants, animals), identify human impact (pollution, waste), and adopt simple conservation habits. This fosters love for nature and responsibility towards sustainable living, as per NCF and NEP 2020.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  • Identify components of our environment (natural and human-made).
  • Explain why conservation is important and name simple ways to protect the environment.
  • Recognize types of pollution and their effects.
  • Practice habits like reducing waste, saving water/energy, and planting trees.

(Objectives in Hindi):

Materials Required

  • NCERT Class 4 EVS textbook ("Looking Around" or "Our Wondrous World").
  • Charts/posters: Components of environment, pollution types, 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle).
  • Pictures: Clean vs. polluted river/forest, trees, animals, waste segregation bins.
  • Waste materials for activity (paper, plastic bottles, leaves – safe items).
  • Blackboard/whiteboard, markers/chalk.
  • Optional: Short video on "Save Water" or "Tree Plantation" (2–3 min), seeds/saplings for demo.
  • Worksheets: Drawing/labeling, matching, true/false (bilingual).

(Materials in Hindi):

Introduction (Period 1: 10–15 minutes)

  • Engagement Activity: Ask open questions bilingually: "What do you see around you outside the classroom? (Sky, trees, birds, people?)" Show pictures of a clean park vs. a littered area. Ask: "Which one looks better? Why do we need to keep our environment clean?"
  • Introduce topic: Our Environment includes everything around us – air, water, land, plants, animals, and people. Conservation means protecting and saving it.
  • Share objectives in both languages.

Main Body (Periods 1–4)

Section 1: What is Our Environment? (Period 1: 20–25 minutes)

  • Explanation: Environment = Surroundings (पर्यावरण = आस-पास का वातावरण). Natural components: Air (हवा), Water (पानी), Soil (मिट्टी), Plants (पौधे), Animals (जानवर). Human-made: Houses, roads, vehicles.
  • Examples: Forests give us oxygen and food; rivers provide water but get polluted by waste.
  • Activity: "Nature Walk" (if possible) or classroom observation – Students list 10 things they see/hear/smell in environment (in English & Hindi on notebook). Group share: "Is it natural or man-made?"

Section 2: Why Do We Need Conservation? & Pollution (Periods 2–3)

  • Explanation: Conservation protects nature for us, animals, and future generations. Pollution harms environment:
    • Air pollution (धूल, धुआँ – smoke from vehicles/factories).
    • Water pollution (गंदा पानी – waste in rivers).
    • Land pollution (कचरा – plastic, garbage). Effects: Animals die, we get sick, less clean air/water.
  • Link to India: Examples – Ganga cleaning, Chipko movement (tree hugging to save forests), Swachh Bharat (clean India).
  • Activity: Role-play in groups (3–4 students): One acts as a polluted river crying for help; others as people throwing waste vs. people cleaning/planting trees. Discuss solutions in both languages.

Section 3: Ways to Conserve the Environment (Period 4: 25–30 minutes)

  • Explanation: Simple habits –
    • Save water: Close taps while brushing.
    • Save electricity: Switch off lights/fans.
    • Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (कम करो, दोबारा उपयोग करो, रीसाइक्लिंग करो).
    • Plant trees: One tree = clean air for many.
    • Say no to plastic bags; use cloth bags.
    • Don't litter; use dustbins.
  • Activity: Hands-on – "Waste Sorting Game": Bring safe waste items. Students sort into: Recycle (कागज/प्लास्टिक), Compost (पत्तियाँ/खाना), Landfill (अन्य). Discuss 3Rs. Pledge: Students write/draw "I promise to..." (e.g., "पानी बचाऊँगा") and share.

Assessment (Period 4–5: 10–15 minutes)

  • Formative Assessment: Bilingual quiz/oral:
    1. Name two natural components of environment.
    2. What is pollution? Give one example.
    3. How can we save water?
  • Worksheet: Match (e.g., Reduce – कम करना), True/False, Draw & label a clean environment.
  • Observation: During activities – participation, teamwork, correct use of terms.

Conclusion (Period 5: 10 minutes)

  • Recap: Summarize bilingually: "Our environment is our home. We must conserve it by saving resources and reducing pollution."
  • Real-Life Connection: In Jharkhand – Protect forests (like in Ranchi or wildlife areas), save water in dry seasons, join school cleanliness drives.
  • Motivation: "Every small action counts – you are nature's little guardians!"

Homework / Extension

  • Draw a poster: "Save Our Environment" with 5 conservation tips (labels in English & Hindi).
  • Observe at home: List 3 ways family conserves water/energy; share next class.
  • Plant a seed (if possible) and observe growth.

Differentiation and Inclusivity

  • Visual learners: Use lots of pictures/charts.
  • Kinesthetic: Hands-on sorting, role-play.
  • Language support: Bilingual instructions, pair strong Hindi/English speakers.
  • Inclusivity: Relate to local Jharkhand environment (forests, rivers like Damodar, tribal conservation practices). Encourage all to participate without fear.

This plan is interactive, activity-based, and promotes experiential learning as recommended in NCERT EVS for primary classes. It can be adapted based on school resources. Let me know if you'd like worksheets, vocabulary list, or extensions!
